The harbour entrance consents have been granted, pending a three-week-long period for appeals to be lodged.
No matter what side of the wharf you sit on regarding this development the independent commissioners making the decision gave all sides of the argument a fair go.
As reported in the Opotiki News, with a project this size there will be significant actual and potential adverse effects on the coastal environment so consent conditions ensured that a "precautionary approach" was taken that would avoid, remedy or mitigate those effects.
Although very early days in the greater scheme of things, it is estimated that both the harbour and aquaculture projects could produce a significant number of jobs and would make Opotiki a major player in the greater Bay of Plenty region.
