Finally, the much longed for, and awaited rain has arrived.

By the bucket load.

That's okay as we were all beginning to feel a little parched.

A good drenching will make us feel totally refreshed.

Yesterday however was a day I was able to enjoy and take photos of a few of the gardens around town before the flowers lose some of their glory.

As with most towns we have a dedicated team of workers who spend a lot of time planning, planting and maintaining the garden beds for the benefit of the community.

The colourful display of flora shown via the photographs enhance 2 picnic sites and the war memorial, allowing everyone to see what productive soil we have here.

PLAYTIME

It's playtime at Opotiki Wharf.

This summer the locals and visitors alike get to experience the provision of waterplay resources. These photos taken today not only show what a cracker day it was here (as per most other days)they also show people enjoying the pontoon, slide and rope swings.

There is a very practical reason for the water play area, it leaves the boat ramp and launching area free and clear for boaties minus swimmers and dippers.

When the area was opened, just before christmas, the mayor and some of the councillors were amongst the first to test the equipment, one even dressed as Santa. That's what I like about this town, everyone is involved.

If river swimming is not to your liking, that's okay, there is a competition for BMX riders and skateboarders at the bowl tomorrow. There is always something to do.

And if you are one of the many hundreds of people lucky enough to have visited our town already you know that.

The Annual Opotiki Rodeo is not to be missed. It features spectacular horse and western type events and is commended by the competing cowboys & girls to be one of the best in New Zealand.
The Opotiki Transport Open Bull Ride starts at 2pm sharp. Carries a $1,000 purse (prize money). The cowboys ride a 700kg bull - bred especially for bucking. This is one of the highest paying events on the national circuit attracting around 200 competitors from the South Island and Australia and over 4,000 spectators.

There are amusements, food and drink stands, and clothing and tack (saddlery), available for purchase.

Great entertainment for all ages.

Waiotahi Estuary

Whether you are holidaying, here for a specific event or just passing through, welcome to our town. The Waiotahi Spit with it's very popular Pipi Beds and rest area offers toilets, a caravan dump station and safe swimming.

As you approach the bridge into town (from Whakatane side) the golf course and the residential area know as Woodlands, are to the right.

Corner of Elliott St and the main shopping area of Church St The main street carving depicts the historic lifestyle of the age from the arrival of white people. It portrays the progress of civilisations introducing agriculture, horticulture and trading. Schooners and scow were the main mode of transport to this coastal town. The essence of the 2 carvings at the entrance to the main street at opposite end of town, is survival, the estern one being a bird and the western, Pikopiko (frond) - the food of our forefathers.

We already know we have a unique character. Our beaches are long, sandy and peaceful; the coast is rocky, picturesque and alive with sea life. We have natural bush clad ranges, DOC reserves and clear freshwater rivers. We are renowned for our friendly people. You know you only have to inquire.

'TIS THE SEASON

It is the season and beyond all reason we feel more pressure than at any other time to spend more money than we can afford, just to celebrate 1 day.

Not everyone subscribes to the 'silly season'. Whether that is because of religious or cultural beliefs, or a refusal to buy in to the commercialism of a day, it does not matter, people can and do make up their own minds.

I have to admit I love the whole package, especially the family get together.
And lights twinkling in the late evening.

Last year in Opotiki the Eastern Bay Energy Trust provided a stainless steel spiral christmas tree that was lit with green and white lights, it made a welcoming beacon for anyone travelling through our town at night.

But of course we are lucky here to be surrounded by natures very own christmas tree, the pohutakawa. A fine example of this being the 'Pohutakawa Tunnel' that welcomes all driving through Waiotahi towards our coastal town.

No matter what your reasons are for your season, we do not discriminate. We have the belief that everyone is entitled to live their life in an environment that offers a holistic approach. Whether you want solace for the soul, metaphysically speaking enjoying all nature has to offer, or just want a different lifestyle and location, don't look past us, we are always looking ahead.

SOMEBODY STOP THE CLOCK

I seem to constantly on the back foot lately and it's nothing to do with my inappropiately healed shoes.

This time of year seems to go very fast and we will soon be heralding a new year.

Every year my plan to be organised by the festive season is thwarted by my inability to be organised by the festive season.

I blame the clock, (I am sure 'global warming'is affecting the rate at which the seconds fly by). Well global warming is blamed for a lot of things, so why not the movement of time.

I love the New Year because no matter what has happened during the past 12 months, psychologically I feel I get another opportunity to make the ensuing year better.

The new year is also an opportunity for commercial trials for the mussel farm, and Whakatohea Aquaculture is also hoping to commence pond farm trials of sea cucumber in 2010. If there is market acceptance of locally 'grown' sea cucumber, there will be strong interest from Bay of Plenty iwi and a Chinese sea food company to invest in research and commercial trials.

So I'm thinking it's going to be a good year for us here in Opotiki and of course there will be benefit for the whole region.

A Time for Celebration

This is a time for Opotiki to celebrate, as Robert Edwards, Chair of Whakatohea Trust Board says. “Our area and our people used to have a vibrant economy,based on our capability to farm, and to trade with others. We dearly wish to restore that tradition and to regenerate a viable economy for Opotiki. The people of Whakatohea have been determined to re-create hope and jobs. We have not yet settled with the Crown, but we have invested a decade of effort and resources into this aquaculture potential.”

Vaughan Payne, ODC Chief Executive concurs. “The Opotiki community, along with Council and Whakatohea, have worked hard to get to this point. Thankyou! We are delighted to now have the support of a regional aquaculture strategy and wider Bay of Plenty networks. We are also pleased at the growing awareness across Government of the potential of aquaculture for “NZ Inc”.

So you can see there are good things ahead for us here.

Here in Opotiki we like to have a little fun.

Natural fun, fun so natural we call it unplugged.

One of the major attractions is the mega mudslide, you can't get more natural than that.

I am not sure about the beauty qualities of the moist soil, but I believe the theraputic qualities are of great benefit. All that stuff oozing through your fingers.

OPOTIKI'S STRIKES GOLD

We have always considered that Opotiki has a wealth greater than what is translated in financial terms, predominately because of it's location.

Now it is confirmed in financial terms. The Opotiki News 3/11/2009 has reported GOLD kiwifruit growers in the district are to benefit more than most from Zespri's October record forecast. Thanks to Opotiki's higher production (approx 20% of the little gold fruit), they have exceeded the industry average and that means more money for the growers. Not bad considering the depressed world fruit market.

While we can thank the strong Japanese yen, and them buying 3rd of the NZ grown gold crop, I think location and soil play their part in a successful orchard as well, and for that...Opotiki can take a well deserved bow. Here they are planting more and more gold.

Coastal climates are good for a lot of things.

Health being one.

Gold kiwifruit offer a healthy store of vitamins C and E, potassium and fibre.

Coastal living can provide good doses of the sun's vitamin D (if taken in sensible doses), potassium from your home grown potatoes and bananas, and fibre from the same source, or the bush.

Or get it all from one of our orchards.

Derby Day

While we are not trying to compete with Flemington's famous Derby Day, we are pretty happy with our own derby day. Opotiki's Bluelight Trolley Derby.

This year's hotly contested event is being held on Saturday 7th November. I think it was initiated for the youth, now many an older person can be seen jostling for a podium finish. For example, my husband a.k.a. 'The Stig', will be driving the local police entry aptly named 'Geriatric Highway Patrol'. His trolley made by a local firm,(of course he assisted), has red and blue lights, a siren fitted, and very little room for movement. I can see that on the day, him getting in and out of this piece of aerodynamic magnificance, will be a treat in itself.

Today was scrutineering day, of course safety is a major consideration. While there was no real concern amongst the soon to be competitors about displaying their 'secret weapons' before the event, there was some keen observation going on.

Unlike Flemington, there will be no totaliser betting or funny hats, just a whole lot of fun in a community that is really good at having a whole lot of fun.

And interestingly, I learned that trolley is the plural of trolly.

MANUAL LABOUR

Samuel Parnell a carpenter in Petone early 1840, was the founder of the 8 hour working day. Thanks to Sam we get the 4th Monday in October as a public holiday.

It was reported that when asked to build a store for one Mr George Hunter, Samuel's reply was "I will do my best, but I must make this condition, Mr. Hunter, that on the job the hours shall only be eight for the day ... There are twenty-four hours per day given us; eight of these should be for work, eight for sleep, and the remaining eight for recreation and in which for men to do what little things they want for themselves. I am ready to start to-morrow morning at eight o'clock, but it must be on these terms or none at all."

You know Mr. Parnell,' Hunter replied, 'that in London the bell rang at six o'clock, and if a man was not there ready to turn to he lost a quarter of a day'. 'We're not in London', said Parnell. With few tradesmen in the young settlement, Hunter had little choice but to accept the carpenter's terms. As Parnell later wrote, 'the first strike for eight hours a-day the world has ever seen, was settled on the spot.'

Parnell's response reminds me of the "you're not in Guatemala now Dr Ropata" quote.

Labour weekend is a celebration of the efforts of our forebears' to keep work to civilised hours, it is also traditionally a time for planting out the vege garden and gearing up for summer.

KEEPING UP THE STANDARDS

Well I never....I never thought it would take 4 days to get over, recover, revive, and feel much better after succumbing to some undiagnosed unwellness....but today there is a glimmer, a mere glimmer of hope and I just might make it through the day.

An article in Saturday's Herald (Herald Homes) refers to misleading advertising and the impact of such. While The Advertising Standards Authority is there to monitor such transgressions and deal with any complaints, often damage is done and is irreparable.

That is why when I refer to living in Opotiki and what is happening here at any given time, you can be confident it is not just from a subjective point of view, or fabricated.

For e.g we do have a CBD (albeit a Compact Business District).

An A & E (5-6 beds)and other health centres.

A supermarket (a smaller version of most city marts and without checkout conveyer belts) plus a couple of superettes.

Our own community radio station 88.1 FM (rumoured to be 'streaming' soon) that I am lucky to be involved with by doing a 1 hour show every week.

Schools, clubs, parks (including skate), movie theatre etc, etc, etc.

Beaches that go for miles (kms), rivers that go for miles (kms), bush that goes for miles(kms)..

A council that are very keen to pursue and promote development, and parade our district initiatives to whomever and wherever needed.

And the list goes on. To long to mention everything and in danger of leaving things out.

Imagine everything one needs to have. For a lifestyle a little less stressful, I believe you will find it here.

WHAT A WEEKEND

It's another big weekend for Opotiki.

Our premium multi sport event, the Motu Challenge is on this weekend, and there is even a very mini version for the kids. Training wheels allowed, especially as the children's age group is 2yrs - 14yrs.

Not for the feint of heart, this endurance event draws participants from far and wide. With 65km mountain bike, 17km run, 52km road cycle, 27km kyak, 8km road cycle and a 3km run, competitors face a gruelling task with an upside of being amongst some of the best scenery multisport has to offer.

This year there is a new event; the Scott Motu 160 cycle challenge, 65km mountain bike will be raced with the Motu Challenge competitors. Multisporters will then split off at Motu to complete their run, ride and paddle; while Motu 160 competitors will get straight onto their road bikes and cycle 90km back over Traffords Hill and down Waioeka gorge to Opotiki.

The mini Motu kidliwinks only have to jog, bike, jog and every child competitor receives a medal. They are the future of multisport so we like to start them young.

Locals like to get out and support competitors, and volunteers galore ensure a smooth running event.

The weather forecast is not brilliant, but I am sure those competing will appreciate cooler temperatures. There are some challengers who have been regular visitors to the town doing trial runs in anticipation of the big action on Saturday.

Of course Sunday is a day of rest and recovery. Usually, the town's cafes' are packed to the gunnels with people brunching, nursing their weary bodies, debriefing and contemplating whether to go through it all again next year.

Sunday is also Bathurst day. Die hard petrol heads will ensure premium television space is available, wear silly hats, dream of being there next year, and have plenty of liquid refreshment handy.

But unlike Bathhurst, we have greenery, rivers, rugged tracks and the best mountain bike section of any race (in NZ admittedly).

That's Opotiki's contribution to multisport.

WATER SPOUT

Great picture taken by Warwick Tilley from Opotiki, of a large waterspout that created a bit of a stir with locals on Wednesday morning.

Predicted at being at least 15 metres across and stirring up a lot of water
it did appear to be heading inward. About 500 metres off the beach it veered off and headed east and appeared to peter out somewhere around the Waioeka rivermouth.

All one needs, a water filled tornado.....

Last weekend was the Delamere Cup, this weekend it's the Muriwai Tournament, colloquilly known as the Pa Wars.

An annual sporting extravaganza of netball and rugby attracting up to 5000 people. Teams come home to Opotiki from throughout the motu and rekindle their whanau links, celebrate their hapu and try to win the ultimate prize of becoming supreme champions for the year.

Individual marae co-ordinate their hapu, and participants are aware of the mantle of mana given to them in representing their tribe. And their ardent supporters are very vocal in lifting the spirit of the competitors.

I am sure it is becoming very apparant that we are a very active town, there is always something happening.

Up and coming events include the Motu Challenge and the Trolley Derby.

Don't be a couch potato. Participate and enjoy the fringe benefits of living in a smaller, rural community, you will always find something do.

THE DELAMERE CUP

This weekend the walls of Opotiki College will be bulging at the seams, with supporters and competitors vying for the much coveted Delamere Cup.

This year is the Golden Anniversary of the Cup competition.
Kapa haka's equivalent to the Grammys is staged annually, and is fiercely contested amongst 100's of primary school children from across the district.

Children rehearse for months to ensure their performances are top notch and powerful.

With 29 teams competing between Friday and Saturday their stamina and skill are challenged every step of the way.

The Delamere Cup is named after Takamore Delamere, he donated the trophy after being inspired by a relative who, after visiting her grandchildren at school, felt there was a lack of Maori culture among the school activities.

Many years on, the competition seems to get bigger and better, and the dedication of the participants and their tutor's is unfailing.

The event is open to all children who wish to become involved, kinda like everything that happens in our town.

Be here for the next event you will not be disappointed.

NATIVE BUSH WONDERLAND

I've said it before and I will continue to say it, we have some pretty wonderful places here in Opotiki.

Hikutaia Domain being one of the many.

Just a few kilometres from the CBD (she says with a wry smile), well we do have a business district, albeit a rather small one, is the Domain.

In a forest like setting, specimen plantings of shrubs, trees, ferns and grasses, and walking tracks, is a parkland that has a great selection of this country's native flora.

The reserve of native plants only is one of the finest in New Zealand and includes many beautiful walks in it's 5ha. Most of the different species of flora are labelled with pegs stating the Botanical name, the place of origin and the common or Maori name, if known.

The domain was established in 1930's and thanks to a local lawyer and amatuer botanist, Mr Norman Potts, the reserve is one of note, not just here but abroad.
While there are a lot of highlights to the domain, the historic tree "Taketakerau" which has a girth of about 22 metres, a height exceeding 23 metres and is estimated as over 2000 years old, is one of not only historical but also great cultural significance to our area, so we really do consider we do have a native bush wonderland.

Oh look there's my car, whilst not of any great historical of cultural significance, it certainly makes my life much easier.

Lots of little parks for picnicing add to opportunities for a more relaxed lifestyle. No-one has to travel far to enjoy any of these.

Unfortunately, spring also heralds allergies that make spring a little less enjoyable for some. I am not sure that warmer climes are much of a panacea for the poor sufferers, but they can take the edge of misery.

A MATTER OF COURSE

Of course we can't all be writing poetry so golfing is probably not a bad option.
Not that I am capable.
My one and only attempt ended with me acknowledging that one must be able to at least hit the ball. As I was not having any luck with that, I passed my bucket of balls to another, rubbed my shoulder and sat and watched others who were able to make the connection of club to ball.

For those who really know what they are doing, Opotiki Golf Club offers a testing 70 par course. There are some great views out to hills and sea to be enjoyed (if not spending all your time searching for stray shots) and fairways and greens that are well looked after.

A dedicated band of locals and visitors enjoy the challenges of the course, the competitive play, the companionship, and undoubtedly the after match debriefings held in the clubrooms.

The harbour entrance consents have been granted, pending a three-week-long period for appeals to be lodged.

No matter what side of the wharf you sit on regarding this development the independent commissioners making the decision gave all sides of the argument a fair go.

As reported in the Opotiki News, with a project this size there will be significant actual and potential adverse effects on the coastal environment so consent conditions ensured that a "precautionary approach" was taken that would avoid, remedy or mitigate those effects.

Although very early days in the greater scheme of things, it is estimated that both the harbour and aquaculture projects could produce a significant number of jobs and would make Opotiki a major player in the greater Bay of Plenty region.

Our economic time has come. Don't miss out.

PIE IN SKY

MEANING: A promise of heaven, while continuing to suffer in this life.

Of American origin and coined by Joe Hill 1911. He was a leading light of the radical labour organisation The Industrial Workers of the World - known as the Wobblies, writing many radical songs for them. The phrase appeared first in Hill's The Preacher and the Slave, which parodied the Salvation Army hymn In the Sweet Bye and Bye. The song, which criticized the Army's theology and philosophy, specifically their concentration on the salvation of souls rather than the feeding of the hungry, was popular when first recorded and remained so for some years.

Just this week a local cafe won a gold medal for their steak and cheese pie.

LETTING OFF STEAM

For those who are looking for little fire in their lives, 48kms out of Opotiki (seaward) is the majestic White Island (Whakaari). It's an active volcano that is constantly erupting, mainly steam although there has been ash and the odd rock chucked about.

The volcanic structure is thought to be 2 million years old while the volcano itself is a mere youngster at 100,000 - 200,000 years old.

In 1899 a sulphur phosphate factory was built and men risked life and limb operating the industry. Unfortunately, in 1914 ten lives were lost when a landslip went into the main crater and erupted with large mud flows. Not to be put off but the grumblings of mother nature at her warmest, another factory was built in 1928. By the 30's the island was becoming fairly active so the business was then closed down for good. Phew, imagine what it was doing to the lungs!

Even though it may be a fierce competitor, White Island is a sanctuary for gannet colonies and a very popular tourist spot.

Whether you are a budding vulcanologist, thrilled by the sight of something so dramatic in the ocean, down right curious or just want to let off steam, here it is.

TALKING RUBBISH

I may at times talk it, I may at times feel it, but here in Opotiki we treat it with the respect it deserves.

For some time now Opotiki has worked hard to minimise the amount of rubbish taken to the landfill (formerly known as 'the dump'). And, due to the introduction of the Waste Minisation Act 2008, Opotiki has now been rewarded for the reduction of waste going to the landfill.

The government has given us cash to get even better at it.

For some good while the district has tried to promote a zero waste policy. The Opotiki Resource Recovery Centre has sorted our trash into appropriate genre's of waste since 1998, and (she says with a tinge of pride) we were the first New Zealand council to take up the challenge of zero waste.

Not only does our council encourage us to think about our waste disposal, we have a group of people who have formed a Transition Town collective to address the depletion of the earth's natural resources. Their weekly column in the local newspaper offers all sorts of helpful informaton including how to become part of the TimeBank. Nothing to do with Dr Who and Timelords.

No matter what the degree of your rubbish, here in Opotiki we can sort it for you, our motto Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

DESIGN PARADIGM

Possibly more commonly known as Russian Nesting Dolls, Matryoshka are a set of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside the other.
The Matryoshka principle is the metaphoric description of a design paradigm, meaning a single object that changes configuration.

I suppose therefore I could,very loosely,use the design paradigm term when describing the area in which I live. Whilst not an object, Opotiki can meet the definition of configuration inasmuchas there are shapes and aspects that are produced by the relative positioning of their parts.

I know that is definitely pushing the boundaries, but a little literary license is allowed.

We have buildings that are historic,with exteriors that belie interiors.

We have a harbour that appears and disappears.

We have an ocean that can be calm and quiet,and then as fierce and loud as thunder.

We have rivers that spawn whitebait that then become golden fritters.

We have soil that produce bountiful gardens.

Etc, etc, etc.

As we all know, nothing is exactly what it seems at first glance.

I believe Opotiki is a design paradigm of significant proportions, in all shapes and aspects, and metaphorically speaking.

HARBOURING WEALTH

The local wharf where many enjoy spending time dangling their lines, and catching kaimoana.

The Opotiki Harbour is in the local limelight this week.

It has been subject to a resource consent hearing lodged by the council for an all-weather harbour entrance at the mouth of the Waioeka River.

If consent is granted it is hoped that an aquaculture venture, the largest in New Zealand, will be one of the beneficiaries. Eastern Sea Farms,the mussel farm licence-holder, intended to begin a 2 -3 year commercial mussel trial later this year. If the trial is successful, commercial development, subject to having suitable harbour access improvements, will commence.

When anything as major as this anticipated project is planned, all affected parties and/or groups get to have a say on the effects of such a project.

Whilst there is the potential for the harbour development to transform our economy here in Opotiki, and that of the Eastern Bay, and perhaps even the wider Bay of Plenty, lots of other factors are to be considered. The plight of the endangered northern New Zealand Dotterels, is one of those factors. These birds nest on the sand spit and two other areas in Opotiki, and Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society is deeply concerned that a threatened species breeding site may be destroyed in the name of economic progress for a project with uncertain outcomes.

The aforementioned are only 2 of many factors being considered. And as is often the case it is about progress versus ecology.

What we are grateful for is the democratic system that allows for all parties to be heard, and knowing a decision will be based on all the information presented.

We know, whatever the outcome of this resource consent, there is a wealth associated with our harbour and district that is priceless.

Be it mussels or Dotterels, we are in a win, win situation.

OUTSTANDING IN THE COMMUNITY

Volunteers are often the 'unsaluted' core of any community.

Here in Opotiki we like to acknowledge those unpaid, hardworking, individual's, groups, organisations and companies for all their efforts by holding the Contribution Awards.

Termed as Opotiki's answer to the 'Oscars', the awards were held in the De Luxe Theatre, hosted by Pio Terei who was ably assisted by our own Mayor John Forbes.
It is an excellent way to acknowledge those who give of their time and resources purely to help others.

The De Luxe Theatre (an example of early provincial cinema architecture), is one of Opotiki's Historic Buildings and has hosted many a special occasion and will continue to do so in the future. A smaller cinema has been 'built' within the main building to cater for smaller movie viewing audiences.

The theatre is managed by a trust (another of those hardworking volunteer organisations) which ensures the theatre is maintained and available for community use.

Our art deco theatre, formerly known as Regent Theatre, opened in 1926 with a silent film 'The White Sister' accompanied by the Melody Boys Band led by Epi Shalfoon. Somewhat different to the 'boy bands' of today.

Here we still like to celebrate some of those days gone by. In September the theatre will host the sixth Silent Film Festival organised by the Community Arts Council. This is a very well attended event and people like to get into the spirit of the occassion by dressing according to the era and travelling in vehicles that are sympathetic to another time and place.

Why not join us for a weekend of fun, a step back in time, and when all things were outstanding in their communities.

Although it is a crisp start to Thursday 18 June 2009, we know the rest of the day will be a stunner. Because that is how it is here.

Thanks to the weather coming from the south, the sea is incredibly calm and for those who were prepared to brave the early coolness, there may have been a frost fish or two for the breakfast.

One of the township's many character homes is getting a facelift. We like to keep as much of our heritage alive as possible. We currently have 26 places listed with the Historic Places Trust and this may be added to in the future. There is a great little booklet named Historic Opotiki....port and portal of the Eastern Bay of Plenty that provides a precis of each of the historic properties.

Photo taken at 8.30 this morning across the road from the office. As you can see from the flags there is just a gentle breeze blowing, and it's just another perfect winter's day.

Numb fingers or toes are just a minor inconvenience. If looking out your window does not bring a sense wonder at what you are viewing, you may need a change of vista.

For those who take note of the minor details will see that the time and day of the posting is different to the actual event. I assume it is because the service provider is in another time zone and I am not computer literate enough to know how to change the time setting for NZ, and quite frankly I don't think it matters. Hence why I wrote actual time and date by the first photo.

Looking out towards Waiotahe.

We are unique.

By nature we are provided with such geographical features that make Opotiki and it's people, individually and communually different from other parts of New Zealand.
Geographically we are on an amazing, virtually untouched piece of coastline. Surrounded by hills and valleys, and meandering roads, but also close enough to the cities of Gisborne, Rotorua and/or Tauranga. Those that need what the cities have to offer, know their journey will only take a couple of hours, will be very picturesque and the roads will lead them home again.

A wonderful outlook over Ohiwa

By nature, our townsfolk are friendly, interested, active and community minded. Because of these things our town is able to host numerous activities where, we not only get to bring people into town, they get to benefit from our hospitality, generousity and overall good looks. Our calendar is annually filled with community initiated events brought about by the hard work and local sponsorship of our citizens, and some well organised fun raising initiatives.

A little micro-climate all of it's own.

By nature, our horticulture industry (kiwifruit) is experiencing some great returns for our hard working orchardists. In a time when other business' are facing a very uncertain future globally, the local industry is thriving and expanding. The climate and soil here are very conducive to good production.

Opotiki by nature is who and what we are, and that's okay as those are essential qualities that lead to the good life.

WHATEVER the WEATHER

Whether your preference is snow or beach, or anything in between, we can oblige.

Ordinarily we have considered our area to have an almost sub-tropical microclimate all of it's own. However, last weekend through several kms of the Waioeka Gorge, there was snow. Winter's white blanket sent a serious chill through our town, and created an enormous thrill for those who enjoyed making snowmen and angels,and those who just wanted to see nature at it's coolest.

Of course it was the first day of Winter

Subsequent to nature's moist litter, we have had very fresh starts to the days, followed by the clearest, bluest, skies and a lake like ocean. There is something about the purity of a fine winter's day. Everything looks so new and fresh it's okay to be cold outside and then feel overlywarm in a sun heated car, or an inside fire or whatever your household equivalent is.

And then will come the rainy season.

We can tolerate that because we know it is not forever, that our soil needs the moisture, those with household tanks need them replenished, and any dusty grime of dry, gets all washed away.

Here in Opotiki, we know that whatever the weather we always look good,that extremes of nature are few and far between, and each season is only (generally) 3 months long and that's very manageable by anyone's standards.

No matter what time of year, you will need to bring your sunnies, board shorts or wetsuit, fishing and hunting gear, light and heavy clothing, surf board and definitely don't forget the snowboard (just in case).

GREEN AS

After 10 days away, I must admit I was yearning for a little of the greenery of New Zealand. Probably even more so, the wonderful hue nature provides, in Opotiki.

Sydney is certainly a vibrant place, multi ethnic, lots and lots of people, sandstone buildings, galleries etc.etc.etc...Food selections that could make gourmet's of us all, being a king prawn lover, my daily habit was well and truly sated. And a transport system that I am sure most Aucklanders'would envy.
Of course there were trees and ocassionally pieces of lawn, all mixed in with a lot of concrete, glass and aluminum.

Even after a wonderful time with family and prawns, I looked forward to my return to a less frenetic pace,space for my soul to be closer to the land and a lot less concrete, glass and aluminum.

We all know there is no place like home. Take note, here we are only green in nature, and perhaps a little ungrown, but we are not greenhorns' in knowing Opotiki's a great place to live.

The Paintings on the Wall

I know the title should read the Writing's on the wall, although as I have previously mentioned, we do things a little differently.

Opotiki is striving to become the New Zealand's Youth Art Capital and we are very pleased to strive for such an honour. The Youth Art in Public Places Project was started in early 2008 under the guidance of, and with help from, Blue Light Youth Aid, Ministry of Social Development and Shona Hammond Boys QSM, the director of Opotiki Childrens Art House.

We do not compare nor compete for any of Katikati's mural glory, we proudly stand by each brushstroke made in an attempt to reduce graffiti and instill a sense of pride in the youth of the town. The young artists recreate scenes that are familiar, historic and specifically local. As a result, they are growing their self esteem by making positive contributions to the community and some real talent has been discovered. Areas that were once dull and drab are now a pleasure to look upon.

Word is starting to spread about our murals. Photographs of the murals were recently displayed at the Royal Easter Show and this week our Youth Aid Officer and Opotiki's Art Director showcased the project to the Blue Light Conference in Queenstown.

Come and see for yourselves how we are painting our town in a differing light, rather than having the writing on the wall.

What's In A Name

In todays business/economic environment, where brands are an important part of a person/product/company/town/city identity, we are not going to be left out.

Pakowhai was the original name of the Maori settlement that is where our township is today.

Our current name, Opotiki, is a shortened version of O Potiki-Mai-Tawhiti, 'the two pets from afar'. Those two pets were fish that belonged to Tarawa who brought them over from Hawaiiki and placed them in a spring above Waiotahi Beach.

Our township is bordered by two rivers, the Otara and the Waioeka. In the early days these rivers provided transport and communication inland, and the natural harbour at Pakowhai assured access to the coastline. Today they still provide those things, just with bridges connecting the riverbanks.

So it does seem rather appropriate that the two fish 'brand' be something that identifies our town. Although not prolific at the moment, there are indications the branding will become more and more meaningful alongside our town name.

As we locals know, there are definitely more than 'two fish'to be found in our rivers and ocean. And with the other natural resources these places provide, we are a place of plenty of kai moana options.

Be part of our 'brand' and know that there is very much more to a name. And be assured that it is alright to be a small fry at times.

When Size Does Matter

Being more diminutive in height than the average person, size has had a quite an impact on my life.

Whilst my mother saved many pennies when buying material to make my dresses, I know a lot of extra effort had to go into making my off the peg pants/trousers the right fit. As I was one of thirteen children, time was a limited commodity for mum.

In my youth I was severely traumatised by being too short for the upper grade school netball teams, I never noticed it so much in my primary school years. Of course it was my short parents fault. How dare they pass on their genetics. Randy Newman's song didn't help my cause at all. And for the rest of my natural born days I will be required to hem most purchases either leg and/or arm. I certainly was one person delighted with the advent of capris', irrespective of the opinion of fashionistas. I think they may class them in the same category as crocs. I love my crocs.

Coming from a 'small' town we know it's about quality not quantity, but we like to 'think big'. Not in the same way as the late Sir Robert Muldoon, but in a way where we recognise the potential of our place and set plans for the future. One of those plan's is Opotiki's Harbour Development Project(note link on blog site). That development coupled with the possibility of a aquaculture project will definitely affect the size of our town. Not only are we excited about these opportunities, Mayor John Forbes has advised that economic leaders from across the Bay of Plenty rated our developments as a priority for government support.
As we all know, having support from neighbours is a good thing.

When size matters in Opotiki, it can come in several differing forms. Be it long term District Plans, the Big 3 competition, growing super sized kumara and blooming large interesting fungi.

Going Bush

I do love to camp.

There is something intrinsically feral about being so close to the earth, mother nature and escaping the rigours and restrictions of everyday living.

I have to admit my camping is not truly basic. I do at least have to have the minimum comfort of a longdrop and access to cold water, preferably on tap. For everything else, including cooking and washing facilities I am happy to live, albeit temporarily, in a very simple way. Not having to vaccum the tent, allows time to catch up on reading, crossword puzzles, sudoku and drinking copious amounts of my favourite tipple.

Of course what comes next is me telling like minded people, there are some great camping sites in the Opotiki District. Of course residents don't have to go far.

For the more intrepid or the downright curious, we also offer bush walks and wonderlands to satisfy all levels of capability and fitness. Whether it be a scenic reserve, track, walkway or a domain, most preferences can be catered for.

A special area of wonder, is the Hikutaia Domain. A magnificent setting where specimen plantings of all types of flora and breathtaking walks are set in 5 hectares of parklike setting. One of the more historic nature has to offer within the park, is the Burial Tree, Taketakerau. Estimated as over 2000 years old and being steeped in the burial customs of the local Maori, this tree is a magnificent sight as well as being one of a significant cultural taonga (treasure).

We are more than happy to share our taonga, be part of our treasure chest, that is Opotiki.

Step It Up

At the gym, as I was making my usual feeble attempt at step class this morning, I was amazed to see two horses walking by the window. I was amazed for a couple of reasons. One being that the horses were untethered and should not have been walking past the window. And the other was because they looked far too frisky for that hour of the day.

I must admit to having a little discomfort around horses. This concern I have is probably based around the fact that being as vertically challenged as I am, standing close to any one of these animals makes me feel rather vulnerable. I was not brought up with horses and have had only one riding experience (in my tender youth) I would rather forget. That does not mean I dislike our four legged friends, it’s just that I prefer two legs and without hooves.

Now there are a lot of people in our area who are horse mad, and I believe may at times suffer a sort of equine fever. Whether for club, competition, or casual enjoyment, some riders take their mounts and their equipment very seriously. Per capita, I would think we have a good proportion of equestrians, and of course the area to allow for it. The region provides both beach and bush areas ideal for riding or trekking, and according to our local information booklet, the local Ngati horses are famous for their quiet nature and sure-footedness in steep inland country.
It is not uncommon to hear clip, clopping around some of the streets within the township and of course evidence remains of where they have been. There is many a keen gardener who is very happy to fertilise their plots with what is left behind.

The pinnacle of horsiness in Opotiki, politically correct or not, is the annual, late in December, rodeo. It’s very popular and attracts several thousand viewers. We are part of the National Rodeo Circuit, and fans and participants have a fun filled day oohing and aahing at the antics of man and beast.

Now let’s face it there are not too many gyms that you go to that will have a view of such equine agility so close at hand. And here the costs to workout and keep trim are very affordable; you can see the sunrise through the exercise room window (post horses) and on Wednesday’s you can step it up to another level.

Bring It On

I know sun worshippers will strongly disagree with me, but I gotta tell you, I love this time of year and what is going to follow over the ensuing months! By the end of daylight saving I am ready to welcome all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Not only is the Autumn visibility far more defined due to the generally cooler climate not affected by any heat haze, but I can rest snugly at night without mosquito’s savaging body parts exposed due to extreme heat. There are a lot worse things to experience than getting frightfully cold and then being able to warm up in several different ways.

From a female perspective, wardrobe options are greater, loads of accessories and of course the much loved long/short/laced/zipped/leather/vinyl/ and indescribably synthetic boots.

Of course if you are bloke it’s not too shabby for you either, there is the Rugby, League, Football, Roar, Duck Shooting, chainsaws for the firewood, poking the fire, and all accessories that go with those pastimes, playtimes and downright good fun.

April also means there is a lot of work to be done. It is very busy here; the kiwifruit season is in full swing. Global crisis aside, the industry that is one of the biggest in our area is not showing any signs of slowing down. Two of our biggest packhouses have expanded and our official unemployment total is down to nine (statistic from Work and Income) this week. Not bad news at all.

So button up, save your skin, and enjoy our cooler time of year, where sometimes-even wool is still too warm. We rarely reach below temperatures; frosts are fairly light due to the sea breeze and you are safe in the knowledge that the Autumn/Winter season is not a patch on what they experience in the Northern Hemisphere or in the Southern parts of New Zealand.

A visit to Auckland to see my son at the Taste Festival, and to catch up with other family members, led me to consider the time I spent behind the wheel.

I set out last Thursday p.m. fooling myself that it would be a restful four-hour journey, tops. Silly me. Why had I not been personally advised that every town I either approached, or just left, had road works happening in varying degrees?
I know that the time of year, and of course budget dictate when these repairs, rehabilitations, corrections and downright inconveniences can occur, but why is it when I am on the road? I admit that at times my emotions swayed from minor frustration to darn near disappointment that I had chosen such a time, day, and month, or even year in which to travel. And I am sure even the hardiest of motorist can appreciate my reaction when finally making it to the Southern Motorway at the same time as the ‘peak hour’ traffic.

I found no solace in my can of V, my Michael Buble compact discs, or the fact that I had arrived in Auckland, albeit in five hours rather that four, because I knew I still had three more days of navigating the wonders of Auckland’s highways, traffic lights, roundabouts, multiple lanes and byways.

Overall I think I must have spent 14 –16 hours travelling about those few days. Obviously anyone in the travel/traffic/transport industry would think that fairly insignificant. But let me assure you, as I do regularly, I live in a township that is five minutes from anywhere of any importance, has no traffic lights, only two roundabouts and has just won for the second year in a row the Bike Wise month Mayoral challenge in the under 11,000 population category.

So for me 14–16 hours in a car is a very long time, when two or four wheels in our town can get you to and from your destination in a lot less time.

You may wish to spot the difference in traffic flow in the above photos. See how many differences you can find between Auckland traffic and Opotiki traffic. Sorry there is no prize, just a comparison of lifestyles, and we believe we are the winners all round.

Hail Glorious St Patrick

I do remember having to sing that hymn with great fervour at High School. Not only did we celebrate the day, but attending St Patricks Girls College (outfitted in our green and cream uniform, which included nifty airforce style caps for winter, and wide brimmed boaters for summer) in Wellington St, Ponsonby, everyday was St Patricks Day.

Whilst paying homage to the patron saint of the Emerald Isle has changed for me over the years, there is a family connnection back to County Cork that has me genetically linked forever. A few great grandfathers ago, on my mother's side, one Daniel O'Sullivan, decided to purloin a barrow of butter and as a consequence the young man was transported to Tasmania for his trouble, I knew my penchant for butter went deeper than mere taste alone. Although it is in my DNA, I do fess up to finding it hard to resist the golden spread dripping from hot crumpets, scones, hot cross buns, and sweetcorn purely for the indulgence, well I am sure you get the picture.

St Patricks Day is also acknowledged here in Opotiki, my eclectic images show some of the tributes to the history of another land. We may not have a Blarney Castle, Bantry Bay,Drombeg Stone Circle or the 8000BC history in our township, but here we offer as green as hills, access to ol'briney, no potato famine, a wonderful sense of humour and some would even say, the "luck of the Irish".

There is potential everywhere you look

The NZ Herald's weekend property magazine, Home truths column of 7 March 09 stated that economists are unanimous that the central bank will again cut its cash rate. Now of course we have the potential to believe that economists agree. The column did go on to advise that the economists did not agree on the amount of the point cut. So who do we believe as to the extent of the recession? And now is probably a good time to throw in an old joke, economists have forecasted 9 out of the last 5 recessions.

New Zealand proudly boasts one of the highest home ownership rates in the world advises the NZ Immigration Service in their Immigration Packs, regarding the cost of living. Of course for new New Zealanders there is the potential to believe that the cost of living in Aotearoa is of such a standard that is too good to miss. And we would concur regarding lifestyle, but if we are to be realistic, our home ownership rating's when compared globally may see a fall over the next few years, based on the cost of living.

On a light hearted note we know that the cost of living, has never affected it's popularity!

So when I say that we in the East Coast of the Bay of Plenty, only have to deal indirectly with economists, and the cost of living here makes home ownership a real possibility, surely you can see the potential at a glance.

How's Your Work Place?

I would like to to lay claim to some of the best working conditions in the world.

The environment being one.

Pity poor me having to drive along the coastline of the Eastern Bay of Plenty yesterday with my colleagues, to list a property in wonderous Whanarua Bay, stopping for a coffee/hot chocolate at a place where the backdrop alone is worth a million dollars. Gosh it's a tough job.

After 30 years as a government employee confined within the four walls of an office for 40+ hours a week, I really do appreciate the freedom my new career and locale provides. Living in a area surrounded by bush, rivers, sea, orchards, farms and ranges one does not have to go far to enjoy a plethora of lifestyle options.

And it would seem that fewer people are smoking in the town's outdoor public places. Perhaps you are wondering where this comment came from considering the previous paragraph made no mention of butts. Opotiki has just marked the one-year anniversary of going smokefree in public places, they were the first council in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts to adopt the smokefree policy. It has been confirmed by the Toi Te Ora health promoter who had the task of reporting the findings to the council, that Opotiki residents care about the future of our children and young people and want to provide a healthy place to play.

So as you can see, not only do we look good, living here is good for you.

As the mornings have just the slightest touch of coolness about them, there is the ever increasing knowledge that the golden summer is about to weave it's long goodbye over our coastal region.

I say this without jest, it can indeed be a lengthy process drifting into Autumn, as the sunshine hours for Opotiki are amongst some of the top in the country. Perhaps we get there by default, but we will take that glory and share it with the world. By default I mean, Whakatane our nearest neighbour, has the official sunshine hour recordings, and we, as neighbours do, accept that must surely include us. Why would we not? Whakatane was 3rd in 2007, claimed the top spot in 2008 until NIWA rained on the parade (pardon the pun) and started an investigation as to why Whakatane has recorded such a high total. Of course it couldn't possibly be that they are fair and square winners, other towns (the losers) are suggesting misrecordings, oh dear.

Now while it may appear that I am touting the benefits of another property district, let me be clear, I am only doing so in respect to the advantages to us, after all, our properties are more affordable, and they have kinda stolen Ohiwa from us, so there must be a little bit of area rivalry. To quote (sadly) a long running Australian (more rivalry) television soap, "Neighbours, everyone needs good neighbours, 'it's when good neighbours become good friends', especially when we can nick their official recordings.

Here I am, embarking on my first blog. Please be patient and understanding if all is not as it should be. This blog is not full of statistics, you can find them in numerous other forms, I wish to be able to share information and opinions in a very informal way.

Living in Opotiki, it's a lifestyle thing.

Given some of the predictions relating to global recession, ( I think I am over that term all ready) and doom and gloom for the ensuing year, I am very happy to be living in an area that does not suffer the same degree of volatility in the property market as that of cities. What this usually means though, any capital gain may take a little longer to achieve, however conversely, there may be a loss if a person is looking for a quick flick of a property in a slow market, therefore long term investment is the better idea.

Do not think I am blaise about the expected recession, I just choose to remind myself and others this is not a new event, history tells us otherwise, there are just different effects each time.

Living in the Eastern Bay of Plenty coastal region allows us to gather food from the sea and rivers, provides soil that produce bountiful gardens, endows us with an extremely predictable climate and an environment where the pace of life is a little slower and less expensive.

For anyone wishing to opt out of the uncertainity of the city, remember the old adage, as safe as houses, and strive and survive in 2009 in little ol' Opotiki.
